Automated Gate - Safety Devices
Safety is a vital part of any gate automation system, automatic gate motors have to move large, often heavy gates, sometimes against heavy winds, because of this, safety assessments and the use of safety devices in gate automation are vital, Safety photocells provide a beam of invisible light across the gateway If this beam is broken, the gates will stop, the photocells protect the area the gates pass through as they are opening and closing, anyone entering this zone breaks the beam which stops the gates.
Safety edges are installed on the ends of gates so that any contact with the safety edge pushes electrical contacts together and the gate immediately stops, while safety edges are effective, their design means that the gate has to hit something before they signal the gates to stop moving, this means that the best gate automation system design always includes an element of safety that mitigates the safety issues identified with an initial safety audit.
The right gate automation installer will always complete a safety audit, this audit will be based on your usage requirements, the location’s limitations, and who will use the gates.
Automated Gate Motors
There are various types of automatic gates motors available for anyone that wants to automate the opening and closing of their gates, The reason there are so many options to choose from is that different types of gates require different motors to make them automatic, this is why it is important to choose the correct motor for the appropriate gate.
Linear Ram Gate Motor
A linear ram motor is possibly the most common type of automatic gate opener for swing gates. Different methods are used to operate the arm, including a worm drive or screw jack. Each one retracts the arm attached to the motor to reduce the length and open the gate, after which it extends the arm to close it.
Underground Gate Motor
Underground motors are another very popular type of automatic gate opener, offering a more discreet aesthetic that many prefer over visible motors. It’s installed beneath the ground inside of a protective case, with the drive arm connecting to the bottom of the gate.
Because the opener isn’t visible it doesn’t ruin the look of the gate, although it requires a more complex installation process that typically results in a higher price for the opener.
Sliding Gate Motor
A sliding gate motor is an opener that uses a cog and teeth action attached to the gate to open it in the preferred direction. It needs to be combined with a guide track, roller guides, or a cantilever device to get it to open in the desired direction.
When choosing a sliding motor opener, you need to think about the motor’s power. The bigger the gate the more power is needed on the motor to ensure it opens at the necessary distance, with heavier weight putting more strain on the opener.

Swing Gate Design
If you have the space for gates to swing open into your driveway without hitting anything, then swing gates are for you, Swing gates usually include two, equal-sized gates that meet in the middle when closed, They then swing open into the driveway to a minimum of 90 degrees. There are alternative swing gate designs including bi-fold swing gates and single swing gates.
Sliding Gate Design
Sliding gates are designed to slide along a track that is installed across the driveway entrance. The gate slides off to the left or right until they clear the driveway completely. As such, sliding gate designs usually include just one gate. But you can have double sliding gates that open in the middle and slide off to each side of your driveway. Variations of sliding gate designs include a sliding gate that looks like twin swing gates. You can have sliding gates made of two, three, or more panels that concertina as they open and slide against each. These telescopic sliding gates are designed for use where space is limited.
